Restore Smoother, Younger-Looking Skin with Restylane® in Ohio
Restylane® is a dermal filler commonly used for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. The injectable reduces the appearance of lines and folds that occur in the middle and lower third of the face, such as smile lines or laugh lines that develop around the sides of the mouth and marionette lines that extend vertically from the corners of the mouth. It is also used for lip augmentation and to add definition to the lips. When applied with care at Fine Arts Skin & Laser Facial Plastic Surgery in Ohio, Restylane® can improve the texture of the skin, enhance desirable contours, and more.

What Causes Facial Wrinkles and Folds?
Facial aging is attributed to two main processes: intrinsic aging (also referred to as chronologic aging) and extrinsic aging. Intrinsic aging is linked to internal factors, such as biological processes slowing. Extrinsic aging is related to external, environmental causes, such as ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Hyaluronic acid is a gelatinous sugar molecule that gives the skin its supple, soft, firm appearance in youth. The molecule occurs naturally throughout the body, providing cushioning and lubrication for joint cartilage, tissues, and eyes. It is most highly concentrated in the skin, where its loss due to intrinsic aging causes skin quality to deteriorate. Many people experience chronic dryness and see lines develop in the skin as their levels of hyaluronic acid drop. With less hyaluronic acid, there is less fullness, but an increased risk of wrinkle formation.
At the same time, production of collagen and elastin (proteins that maintain the youthful structure of the skin) also decline.
Some of the external aspects that cause harm to the skin include UV radiation, the force of gravity, cigarette smoke, and pollution. Lifestyle factors and bad habits can also play a major role in accelerating the aging process. The combined result of intrinsic and extrinsic aging results in skin that is weakened, dehydrated, wrinkled, and droopy.
How Does Restylane® Work?
Restylane® is administered as an outpatient procedure, and the entire session lasts anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. In basic terms, once injected directly into the treatment area with a fine needle or cannula, Restylane® binds to and retains water in the dermal layer to produce volume. It fills in wrinkles and sunken areas and can add a subtle improvement to facial symmetry. To ensure Restylane® is evenly distributed, Dr. Hartman may gently massage the area after making the injections.
Adults who are older than 21, who are in good physical, mental, and emotional health, and who are not allergic to hyaluronic acid products are good candidates for Restylane®. Pregnant women and people with bleeding disorders, skin diseases, inflammatory conditions, or infections around the treatment site are not advised to choose Restylane®.
Restylane® vs. Juvederm®: What’s the Difference?
Restylane® and Juvederm® are both dermal fillers derived from hyaluronic acid and formulated in a very similar way. Both non-surgical services can be used to add volume to address facial wrinkles or fill in sunken or sagging areas on the face. In terms of cost, the fillers are almost evenly matched, with Juvederm® being the slightly less expensive alternative. That said. Dr. Hartman will work with each patients to determine which filler is best in each situation.
Results, Post-Care, and Recovery
Some variations of Restylane® contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic that helps to numb the area and reduce discomfort during the injection session. The majority of Restylane® patients experience only minor side effects during the first week after their injections, including some swelling, redness, and light bruising. To maintain optimal results over time, Dr. Hartman usually recommends scheduling additional follow-up treatments. The results last around 10 months to one year, on average.
More Injectable Options
For wrinkles caused by muscle motion, BOTOX® or Dysport® are designed to inhibit contractions and provide a smoother look. These injectables can be combined with Restylane® and other treatments for a natural-looking rejuvenation that refreshes the entire face.
